Tree Trimming and Pruning
A trimmed tree is a safer tree. We trim and prune trees for homes and businesses across northern New Jersey to keep branches off roofs, wires and windows and to keep the tree healthy.
Trimming and pruning are not the same
Trimming keeps a tree tidy by cutting back growth. Pruning takes off specific branches, such as dead, damaged or crossing ones, for the health of the tree. Most jobs need a little of both, and we tell you which is which before we start.
Branches over the roof
Limbs that hang over a roof drop leaves and sticks into gutters, rub the shingles in the wind, and can come down in a storm. We take them back and remove the brush.
Thinning and shaping
Thinning opens up dense branches so light and air get through. Shaping gives the tree a clean, balanced form. Crown reduction lowers the height or spread of the top when a tree has outgrown its space.

In New Jersey
Before the next storm
New Jersey gets strong winds from nor'easters and tropical storms, and limbs that are dead or overloaded are the first to go. Taking out dead wood and thinning heavy branches before storm season gives the wind less to grab. Tell us what worries you when you request your estimate.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between trimming and pruning?
- Trimming keeps a tree tidy by cutting back growth. Pruning removes specific branches, such as dead, damaged or crossing ones, to keep the tree healthy. Most jobs use a bit of both. At your estimate we point out which branches we plan to take off and why, so you know exactly what the tree will look like when we leave.
- When is the best time to prune?
- It depends on the type of tree. Dead and dangerous branches can come off any time of year. Many trees are easier to read in late fall and winter when the leaves are down, because you can see the shape of the branches. Call us and we will tell you what makes sense for your trees.
- Can you trim tall trees?
- Yes. We have a bucket truck for jobs that need one. It lets us reach high limbs over roofs, driveways and power line areas without climbing every branch, and it keeps the work steady and controlled.
- Is trimming enough, or does my tree need to come down?
- If a tree is healthy and the problem is a few branches, trimming can be enough. If the tree is dead, split or leaning, removal may be the safer choice. Cutting too much off a weak tree can make things worse, so we would rather tell you the truth up front. We will tell you honestly at your estimate.
