Why Oxford Township
What we see on the ground
Officially, the town is the Township of Oxford.
The Oxford Furnace was built in 1741. It was the third furnace in Colonial New Jersey and the first built at a site where iron ore was actually mined.
In 1835 it was the site of America's first successful use of the hot blast technique, which blew preheated air into the furnace to cut production time.
The furnace operated until 1884 and is listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places.
