Stump Grinding

A leftover stump is a tripping hazard that gets in the way of mowing and takes up space. We do stump grinding and stump removal for homes and businesses across northern New Jersey so the ground is clear.

Grinding or removal

Stump grinding uses a machine to cut the stump down below the surface. Stump removal takes out the stump and its main roots. We do both, and we can tell you which one fits your yard when we come out.

Why not leave it

Stumps can send up new shoots, get in the way of mowing and fencing, and trip up kids and pets. They also take up space you could use for lawn, a garden or a new tree.

After the stump is gone

Grinding leaves a pile of wood chips where the stump was. We leave the chips on-site unless you ask us to haul them away, which we can add for an extra cost. Once the stump is out, the space can be filled and re-seeded or planted. Tell us your plans, like a new lawn, a garden bed or a new tree, and we will talk it through.

Stumps and town rules

Some New Jersey towns care about stumps. Springfield, for example, requires that a tree approved for removal be taken down so that no stump remains visible above the ground. If your town has a permit rule for tree removal, ask whether it covers the stump.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Grinding uses a machine to cut the stump down below the surface. Removal takes out the stump and its main roots. We do both. Grinding is the more common choice for a lawn, while full removal makes sense when you plan to build, pave or plant in the exact same spot.
How much does stump grinding cost?
The price depends on the size of the stump, how many there are, and how easy they are to reach. A stump behind a fence or on a slope takes more work than one in an open front yard. Call or use the form for a free estimate.
Can I plant grass or a new tree afterward?
Usually yes. Once the stump is gone, the space can be re-seeded or planted. The ground chips can be raked out and replaced with topsoil before seeding. Tell us your plans and we will talk it through.
Can you take care of more than one stump?
Yes. Tell us how many you have and where they are. Doing several stumps in one visit is usually more efficient than one at a time, and old stumps from past removals can be included too.
Do you haul away the wood chips?
Not unless you ask. Grinding leaves a mound of wood chips where the stump was, and we leave it there by default. Many people use the chips as mulch. If you want them gone, ask for haul-away and cleanup when you get your estimate. It costs extra, and we include it in your price up front.
